It was cloudy this morning and I knew we were in for some rain here in St. Louis Missouri, but then I guess because of it being Earth Day and all, Mother Nature just had to show off. She brought us Hail, it wasn’t giant or anything, but it lasted a good 3 minutes, and I live next to an automotive place that is covered in metal, so the roar from the hail hitting their business was amazingly loud.

I had plans to go out today and grab a couple of plants from Lowes, and have my son and I plant them in our yard, but at least for today that plan seems dashed. Even though the hail has stopped the rain is coming down fast with big fat drops, I had to race around the house like a mad woman shutting all the windows.

There will always be another day to plant some flowers, but I had wanted to share this day with my son outside. Instead we will be spending it indoors. However he did just get a really cool lesson about hail, so that’s point one in teaching my son on Earth Day. He is three and thought it was the coolest thing he has ever seen, while my husband worried about his car, my son was watching with excitement and asking question, after question about what was happening.

I managed to capture two pictures, it was pouring really bad while the hail was coming down, and keeping the camera dry was priority number one. The pictures are pretty good although the lens did get a little wet. While I was rushing to make sure all the window were closed and my son wasn’t leaning too far out the door, he got pinged by one piece of hail which in return caused him to give an ouch yelp, followed by a laugh and, “wow mom that was cool.”

Earth Day for those of you who don’t know is a day we celebrate the Earth, trying to come up with new ways to be good to our environment, and help out the planet. Picking up trash you see on the ground, recycling, and planting trees, flowers, and vegetables are all great ways to celebrate Earth Day. A lot of kids will come home today from school with a tree to plant, or at least that is what used to happen when I went to school.

It is a great day to stop and take the time to teach your child about the Earth. Since it is spring it is easy to show them all the wonders of the new life sprouting out of the ground, on the trees and every where you look. Ask them questions about how they would keep the planet clean, and engage them in Earth day activities. You can find some great arts and crafts projects for earth day at Enchanted Learning.
